Play Rumors by Lizzo & Cardi B : Defamation/Libel
Defamation is the worst fear for someone working in media. It's known as a civil wrong or slander One incorrect slip-up could affect your career, but not in a good way. Back in the day, there were actually fights to right these wrongs. I mean fist fights, but now there is a more civil way to handle it. In today’s society, you could be owing someone millions of dollars for a misinformed comment. However, there are five steps to get to that point. The steps are the following: The defamation was posted, the material affected the victim, the information is defamatory, the material was false, and the defendant was responsible. The fourth applies if the defendant is a part of mass media.
An example of this would be the Cardi B vs. Tasha K case. Tasha K is known for her gossip live streams on Youtube. CNN states, “Cardi B, whose real name is Belcalis Marlenis Almanzar, was targeted by Latasha Transrina Kebe, who goes by the name Tasha K, in a “malicious” campaign to “damage and destroy” her reputation among her fans, according to a 2019 lawsuit filed in the US District Court Northern District of Georgia.” (Paragraph 2) She made many defaming comments about how Cardi B uses cocaine heavily and has herpes. #TashaKisover was trending on Twitter after Cardi won the case. The plaintiff received over one million dollars in damages. There are some cases that are easy, but there are others that are hard. People working in mass media have to realize their comments may have a price. #defamation #usdistrict #massmedia
