Media Technology & Ethics: I always feel like somebody's watching me

The internet is one of the biggest creations in today's society. From technology to social media, there are many creations. However, you have to be aware and alert. With technology advancing, some people feel as if their privacy is being breached. Are we being watched? Is our data being collected? There are so many unanswered questions. For example, there was an interview with Instagram’s CEO and Gayle King. She asked, “Are you listening to our private conversations?” This sparked because she and many others have experienced similar situations. You could be talking about a certain product, and barely a day later an advertisement for it pops up on your feed. Coincidence? I think not. You have to be careful with social media and what you say/do. Sometimes being too public can backfire and put you at risk. #beware

Ethics in media and technology is an important factor. In filmmaking, there are three ethical morals. Honor the subjects, the viewers, and the production staff. American Documentary states, “Perhaps because the terms of these releases were not their own, filmmakers often provided more leeway to their subjects than the strict terms provided in them. Filmmakers often felt that subjects had a right to change their minds (although the filmmakers found this deeply unpleasant) or to see the material involving them or even the whole film in advance of public screenings.” (Paragraph 6) This works well when the subject is alive, but what if they aren’t? There have been many documentaries and biopics that have been far-fetched. Blonde, the Netflix Original movie, is based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Although, the movie is not factual. For example, there is a scene in the movie between Marilyn and JFK (John F. Kennedy). USA Today states, “She exclaims that she's being treated like "a piece of meat" as Secret Service agents physically carry her to Kennedy's suite. There, in a drug- and booze-filled haze, the president forces her to perform oral sex before raping her.” This was proven to be false and horrifically inaccurate. Films like these take away the legacy of the subjects. It is unethical and disrespectful.
