  In the media, we see different types of representation and diversity. Representation is how the media represents various ages, genders, races, etc. The lack of diversity can tie into the lack of representation. Black women are a prime example of this. SeeJane state, “Much of the existing research on race and gender in entertainment media analyzes representations of women and Black people as two distinct groups, but far less is known about the intersectional depictions of Black girls and women in Hollywood.” (Paragraph 1) Black women and girls experience discrimination and stereotypes. They are portrayed as loud or ghetto. For example, the show “Everybody Hates Chris”. The show is set in the 1980s and follows the life of Chris and his family living in Brooklyn. His mom, Rochelle is seen as loud and “extra”. Chris’ teacher describes her as a crack addict several times in her conversations with Chris. This portrays black mothers in a negative light. The internet is one of the biggest creations in today's society. From technology to social media, there are many creations. However, you have to be aware and alert. With technology advancing, some people feel as if their privacy is being breached. Are we being watched? Is our data being collected? There are so many unanswered questions. For example, there was an interview with Instagram’s CEO and Gayle King. She asked, “Are you listening to our private conversations?” This sparked because she and many others have experienced similar situations. You could be talking about a certain product, and barely a day later an advertisement for it pops up on your feed. Coincidence? I think not. In media and communication, you have to learn the difference between ethics and morals. Ethics is based on an intellectual level whereas morals are habits similar to character traits. Ethics shows learning right and wrong without the influence of religion. With morals, it ties into your relationship with religion. For example, the bible has ten commandments. All of them are telling you how you should act. Such as “You shall love your neighbor as yourself”. Therefore, treat your neighbor the way you would treat yourself. Ethics is the opposite of this. Ethics is whether it is legal. Ilegal things such as robbing a store or murdering someone are unethical. The issue with people not knowing the difference between morality and ethics is that they are projecting their feelings/religion. A Catholic woman telling a non-Catholic woman that divorcing her husband is unethical. She would be incorrect because it is not illegal to get a divorce. With intellectual property, there are three basic rules. These rules are the following: What is it? Why does it exist? Where does it come from? This can be a simple design, slogan, or any other invention. It depends on the creator/manufacturer. Most creators opt for copyright. If someone would try to steal or profit from their idea, they can be sued for copyright infringement. I could open a chicken shop and say that the food is “finger-lickin’ good”. Defamation is the worst fear for someone working in media. It's known as a civil wrong or slander One incorrect slip-up could affect your career, but not in a good way. Back in the day, there were actually fights to right these wrongs. I mean fist fights, but now there is a more civil way to handle it. In today’s society, you could be owing someone millions of dollars for a misinformed comment. However, there are five steps to get to that point. The steps are the following: The defamation was posted, the material affected the victim, the information is defamatory, the material was false, and the defendant was responsible.   Reporters are one of the most important factors in the news. However, if they do not have access to the facts, how can they report it? It has been almost 60 years since the FOIA has been passed by President Johnson in 1966. FOIA or the Freedom of Information Act allows access to all federal records not including the nine exemptions. One of the exemptions is that it could restrain a party from having a fair trial. Hence the purpose of citizens being randomly picked for jury duty. There have been many historic news events that have been reported but would not be possible without this act. An example that falls into this is 9/11.
